The University of the Philippines Manila – College of Medicine is re-opening their Master of Science in Health Informatics (medical informatics track) training program and will start accepting new students for AY 2011-2012 on January 2011.

A RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE APPROPRIATE SENATE COMMITTEE/S TO INVESTIGATE, IN AID OF LEGISLATION, THE ALLEGED EXPLOITATIVE PRACTICE OF SOME HOSPITALS THAT EMPLOY REGISTERED NURSES AND NURSING GRADUATES AS “ON-THE-JOB TRAINEES” (OJTs) INSTEAD OF HIRING THEM AS REGULAR EMPLOYEES AND WITHOUT GIVING PROPER COMPENSATION, AND THE ALLEGATION THAT THESE HOSPITALS CHARGE THE NURSES ADDITIONAL FEES FOR TRAINING, WORK EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION.

A little background information about Senator Pia S. Cayetano
Her Legislative achievements include:

  • "Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010," which restores the 20-percent discount of the elderly by exempting their purchases from the 12-percent value added tax;
  • "Magna Carta of Women," which aims to end all forms of gender discrimination; and
  • "Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act," which establishes lactation stations in public places and the workplace to allow working mothers to continue breastfeeding.

Senator Pia S. Cayetano also worked for the passage of the following:

  • "Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicines Law of 2008," which seeks to lower prices of essential medicines;
  • "Food and Drugs Administration Act" which strengthens government mechanisms to ensure the safety of food, drugs and cosmetics being sold in the market;
  • "Hospital Detention Act" which prohibits the "detention" of indigent patients on account of unsettled medical bills; and the
  • "Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office or PDAO Act," which institutionalizes the creation of an office to look after the concerns of people with disabilities in all local government units.
